Last Post Service
Join us at week’s close to honour those who have served and sacrificed so that we may enjoy our lives of relative peace, comfort and freedom.
Each Sunday we pause to remember a different event from Australia’s military history. We remember the men and women who took part in those events, and the lives lost or forever changed.
Today we remember the Bangka Island massacre. Having survived the sinking of their ship, the Vyner Brooke, 22 Australian Army nurses and 60 soldiers and crew members reunited on Bangka Island on 16 February 1942. With the Japanese in control of the island, the group surrendered only to be massacred on the beach. Australian nurse Sister Lt Vivian Bullwinkel, British sailor Ernest Lloyd and American Eric Germann were the only survivors.
This service will be live streamed.
