Patricia Violet Slater OBE (1918–1990) was at the heart of the move to develop the nursing profession in the second half of the last century. She was a committed nurse educator, convinced of the necessity of change in nurse education, and had the courage of her convictions to act. She initiated and shaped the effort of the profession to upgrade nurse education, forging alliances, gaining consensus and participating in an unprecedented, successful, national political campaign for change.
