The ANMC Board congratulates Emeritus Professor Maxine Duke AM on the recent Australia Day honours.  We are very proud and are privileged to benefit from Professor Dukes expertise as a member of the ANMC Scholarship Committee.

Emeritus Professor Maxine Duke AM, has received a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to education, to nursing, and to professional associations. Professor Duke has had a distinguished and influential association with Deakin University and has made a profound impact to the nursing profession in Victoria and Australia.


Between 2016-19, Professor Duke was an Alfred Deakin Professor, and until 2020 was Executive Dean (Acting) of the Faculty of Health. She was Head, School of Nursing and Midwifery and Chair, Nursing Development at Deakin for 12 years from 2007-19. Her academic career drew heavily on her experienced as an acute care nurse. She was also Director, Quality and Patient Safety Strategic Research Centre from 2014-19. Her leadership in developing partnerships between health services and the tertiary sector was recognised with a Business Higher Education Research and Training (BHERT) award for Outstanding Collaboration in Higher Education & Training for 2019. Her leadership has been significant over her career, having been a member of numerous advisory bodies, including the Barwon Health, Epworth and Cabrini Advisory Committees.

Equally remarkable has been her commitment to professional services and education in the health sector at a national level, as a member of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council, and the Nurse Practitioner Accreditation Committee from 2012-19. Since 2019, Professor Duke is a Board member of the Victorian Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and the Victorian Nurses and Midwives Trust and sits on the scholarship committee of the Australian Nurses memorial Centre. She is a previous board member of the Nurses Memorial Centre and Australian Council of Deans of Nursing and Midwifery, among many others.

Her research has concentrated on Hospital in the Home (HITH) initiatives. Using a quality and safety framework, she has investigated the practices that underpin the development of alternative care delivery models. Professor Duke continues to help shape and improve the health profession in Australia in her various roles.
